My Liliw... Ang Tsinelas

“Ang Tsinelas”
A story of Success in Stride
By: Ruthinian Gavar Orona

"Make success a habit.
The more you do it, the easier it gets, the lesser time it takes,
the better you become at doing it."
-Dero Pedero-

For a true-blooded Liliweno (a native of Liliw), the “tsinelas” (slipper) is an integral part of his existence. This may be an understatement though, but this humble town in Laguna where slipper is its most famous product can be rightly addressed today as “The Slipper Capital of the Philippines”.

Endowed with great riches from the Omnipotent One, hope springs eternal for the town’s folk who draw strength from the cool pristine water gushing from Mt. Banahaw. A small yet unassuming town nestled at the foot of the mystic mountain, blessed with green lush and bountiful verdant of coconut trees… Liliw is at peace with nature and its people. People who are living a simple life where harmony and reticence are by-products of inherited contentment. And for these, the Liliwenos have good reasons to thank God for. Needless to say, they are great people with rich cultural background and extraordinary affability to achieve success in life through hard work and creativity.

After the success of the “First Liliw Tsinelas Festival in 2002”, history about the first tsinelas ever made has been told time and again…tracing back history… how it all begun…and how far it has gone.

Author’s Note: This is an excerpt from the Featured Write-up on the Liliw Tsinelas Festival Souvenir Program published in 2003 written by yours truly. The entire write up will be posted here in 4 parts as my tribute to my dear hometown and part of the Meme “Our Philippines”.
